Highly skilled and well-educated mental health practitioners all too often lack specialized training in sexuality and eroticism. It is not necessary, nor expected for all therapists to be trained sex therapists or clinical sexologists. However, most clients nowadays expect to be able to talk about some aspects of their romantic and sexual life with their therapists. Rarely are these mainstream psychotherapy clients needing treatment for dysfunction; rather, a conversation facilitating erotic empathy for themselves as well as their partners may be very helpful.
The Centre for Erotic Empathy, first and foremost, seeks to offer opportunities for consultancy to better equip trained mental health and medical professionals for these kinds of discussion; Accessible, evidence based, and engaging opportunities for professional collaboration, in addition to events open to the public.
A vital element of developing Erotic Empathy competence is experienced through a sense of community within which erotic discourse thrives. Monthly collaborative case consultation discussions provide a venue and ritualized opportunity to attend clinical discussions facilitated by an therapist experienced in navigating conversation pertaining to erotic life. This is an environment in which clinicians and various helping professionals may participate or simply witness a style of dialogue different from that in which they were trained.
Erotic Empathy competence promotes curiosity in the context of taboo and shame around sex, challenging preconceived notions and socialized values harmful to our clients. Practitioners are welcome to suggest topics for discussion, offer to present a case, simply attend and/or participate at their desired level of engagement.
Monthlies take place from 7-9 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month. Stay tuned for when they begin!
The Centre for Erotic Empathy offers evening, half-day, one, or two day workshops for continuing education credit. Please contact us for accreditation information and to be informed of upcoming availability.
